Shoppable images, explained
A shoppable image is a photo with tappable hotspots on the products in it. Tap the jacket in a street-style shot and you get the jacket — price, variants, add to cart — without leaving the page. It is the simplest form of shoppable content and often the most under-used, because most brands already have hundreds of suitable images sitting unused.
How they work
- Take an image containing several of your products — a styled outfit, a room scene, a flat lay.
- Place a hotspot on each product and link it to the catalogue item.
- Publish it. Tapping a hotspot opens a product card with add-to-cart in place.
When images beat video
Video is better at motion, fit and demonstration. Images win when:
- The scene contains many products. One room or one outfit can carry six or eight hotspots comfortably; a video would have to reveal them over time.
- You want browsing, not watching. An image is understood instantly; a video asks for a time commitment.
- Weight matters. Images are a fraction of the page weight of video — useful on collection pages and on poor connections.
- You already have the assets. Every brand has a lookbook. Very few have a video library of the same depth.
Where to use them
| Placement | Why |
|---|---|
| Lookbook / "shop the look" | Sells the whole outfit, raising units per order |
| Homepage hero | Turns a brand image into a route into the catalogue |
| Room or scene shots | Home and furniture — one scene, many products |
| UGC galleries | Customer photos become a buyable social-proof wall |
| Blog and editorial | Lets content marketing convert directly |
Getting them right
- Make hotspots visible. A subtle pulsing dot works; invisible hotspots do not get tapped.
- Do not overload. Beyond roughly six per image it becomes a puzzle.
- Check on mobile. Hotspots need to be thumb-sized, not cursor-sized.
- Keep them current. A hotspot pointing at a discontinued product is worse than no hotspot.
- Compress. Lookbook images are often enormous straight from the camera.
Images and video together
The strongest setup uses both: shoppable images for browsing and styling, shoppable video where fit and motion decide the sale. Quinn handles the video side on Shopify — reels, TikToks and product clips made tappable, compressed up to 20×, no theme code, free plan to start.
Questions
What is a shoppable image?
A shoppable image is a photo with tappable hotspots placed on the products in it. Tapping a hotspot opens a product card with price, variants and add-to-cart, so a shopper can buy what they see without leaving the page.
How do I make an image shoppable?
Upload the image to a tool that supports product hotspots, place a hotspot over each product, link each to the matching catalogue item, and publish. On Shopify this is an app feature rather than something you build.
Are shoppable images better than shoppable video?
They do different jobs. Images are better when a scene contains many products, when you want instant browsing, or when page weight matters. Video is better for fit, motion, texture and demonstration. Most stores benefit from both.
How many products should I tag in one image?
Up to about six. Beyond that the image becomes a puzzle and tap rates fall. Make hotspots visible and thumb-sized, and check the result on a phone rather than a desktop.
