Product videos that actually sell
A product video earns its place by answering the question that is stopping the purchase. Everything else — the drone shot, the licensed track, the slow-motion pour — is decoration. Here is what to film, how to film it without a crew, and how to make sure the video does commercial work rather than sitting there looking expensive.
Start with the objection
Before filming anything, write down the reason people do not buy this product. It is usually one of five: will it fit, how big is it really, what is it made of, how does it work, or can I trust this brand. Each has a video format that answers it directly. A video that does not answer one of them is brand content, which is fine — but do not expect it to move conversion.
The formats worth filming
| Format | Answers | Best placement |
|---|---|---|
| On-body / in-use | Will it fit, how does it move | Product page, position two |
| Scale reference | How big is it really | Product page gallery |
| Close-up texture | What is it made of | Product page, collection |
| How-to / demo | How does it work | Product page, below fold |
| Customer UGC | Can I trust this | Homepage wall, PDP |
| 360° spin | What does the back look like | Gallery |
| Unboxing | What actually arrives | PDP, post-purchase |
How to shoot them without a crew
- Use a phone. Modern phone video is more than good enough, and it reads as more honest than studio footage.
- Shoot vertical, 9:16. That is where it will be watched, and it can always be cropped down.
- Use daylight. Near a window, indirect. It beats any cheap lighting kit.
- Keep it under 30 seconds, and put the answer in the first three.
- Make it work on mute. Most people never turn sound on — if the video needs audio to make sense, add text.
- Stabilise. A £15 tripod removes the one thing that makes phone video look amateur.
The part most stores skip
A product video that cannot be bought from wastes the conviction it just created. Tag the products inside it so a convinced viewer can add to cart in one tap — and so you can see, per video, how much revenue it produced. Without that attribution you cannot tell a video that sells from one that merely gets watched.
Reuse what you already have
Most stores own more usable footage than they think: Instagram reels, TikToks, clips customers tagged you in, and offcuts from past photoshoots. Quinn imports reels and TikToks by link and makes them shoppable on Shopify, so the fastest route to product video is usually reusing rather than filming.
Questions
What makes a good product video?
It answers the specific objection stopping the purchase — fit, scale, material, function or trust — in under about 30 seconds, shot vertically, and comprehensible with the sound off. Everything beyond that is decoration.
How long should a product video be?
Under 30 seconds for product pages and social placements, with the answer delivered in the first three seconds. Longer demos and tutorials can run past that, but they belong below the fold, not in the gallery.
Do I need a professional videographer for product videos?
No. Phone footage in daylight, shot vertically on a cheap tripod, is enough for product pages and often outperforms studio video because it reads as honest. Save professional production for brand films.
Where should product videos go on my store?
The product page first, positioned second in the gallery right after the hero image, since that is where the decision happens. Then a customer-video wall on the homepage for trust, and collection-page video to sell the category.
How do I make product videos shoppable?
Use an app that tags products inside the video so viewers can add to cart without leaving. On Shopify, Quinn does this with your own clips or imported reels and TikToks, and reports add-to-carts and orders per video.
