Add video to a Shopify product page
The product page is where the decision happens, which makes it the highest-value place on your store to put video. It is also the place where weight hurts most, because a slow product page loses the order outright. Here are the three ways to do it and how to pick.
Method 1 — Native product media (easiest)
- Go to Products and open the product.
- In the Media section, click Add media and upload your MP4 or MOV, or paste a YouTube/Vimeo URL.
- Drag it into position — second, after the hero image, usually performs best.
- Save.
Shopify hosts and compresses it, so speed is handled. Limits: it lives in the gallery only, styling is whatever your theme does, and it cannot be tagged with other products or tracked as a revenue source.
Method 2 — A theme section or block
Many themes offer a video block you can place in the product template via Online Store → Themes → Customize. Useful when you want video below the fold — a demo or a size guide — rather than in the gallery. Still not shoppable, and options are limited to what the theme exposes.
Method 3 — A shoppable video app
An app adds video as a managed block: your own clips, Instagram reels or TikToks, with products tagged inside, placed anywhere on the template without theme code — plus attribution telling you whether the video actually sold anything.
Choosing
| If you want… | Use |
|---|---|
| One clip in the image gallery | Native product media |
| A demo lower down the page | Theme section |
| Reels or TikToks on the PDP | An app |
| Cross-selling other products from the video | An app |
| To know which video earned revenue | An app |
What to actually put in the video
Product-page video has one job: answer the question stopping the purchase. For apparel that is fit and drape on a real body. For anything physical it is true scale — the product next to a hand or in a room. For anything with a function it is the thing working. Keep it under about 30 seconds, shoot vertical, and make sure it reads on mute, because most people will not turn sound on.
Keeping the page fast
Product pages are mostly loaded on phones, often on poor connections. Compress before uploading, never autoplay with sound, lazy-load anything below the fold, and be careful with YouTube embeds near the top because of the third-party script cost. Quinn compresses video up to 20× with an in-house AI encoder and lazy-loads from a CDN.
Questions
How do I add a video to a Shopify product page?
Open the product in Shopify admin, go to the Media section, click Add media, and upload an MP4 or MOV or paste a YouTube/Vimeo URL. Position it second, right after the hero image, which usually performs best. For video outside the gallery or video that shoppers can buy from, use an app.
Can I add a video to a Shopify product page without an app?
Yes — native product media supports video, and most themes include a video block you can place in the product template. Neither makes the video shoppable, and neither reports whether the video contributed to revenue.
Where should the video go on a product page?
Second in the gallery, immediately after the hero image, is the usual best position — visible without scrolling but not replacing the main product shot. Longer demos and size guides work better further down the page.
How long should a product page video be?
Under about 30 seconds. It has one job: answer the question stopping the purchase — fit, scale, or the product working. Shoot vertical and make sure it makes sense on mute, since most shoppers will not enable sound.
Will a product page video slow down my store?
It can if it is uncompressed or autoplaying at full size. Compress before uploading, lazy-load below-the-fold video, and avoid heavy third-party embeds high on the page. Quinn compresses up to 20× and lazy-loads from a CDN to keep the impact minimal.
