How to add video to Shopify
There are four practical ways to get video onto a Shopify store, and they differ mostly in how much control you get and what they do to your page speed. Here is each one, when to use it, and how to go from simply having video to having video that sells.
Option 1 — Product media (built in)
Upload a video directly to a product in Products → [your product] → Media. It appears in the product gallery alongside the photos.
Good for: a quick fit or demo clip on a specific product. Limits: gallery only — you cannot place it elsewhere, style it, or tag other products in it. Shopify hosts and compresses it, so speed is fine.
Option 2 — A theme section
Most modern Shopify themes include a video section. Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, add a section, and choose the video block. Upload a file or paste a YouTube/Vimeo URL.
Good for: one hero video on the homepage. Limits: layout options are whatever your theme allows, it is not shoppable, and YouTube embeds pull in third-party scripts that cost page speed.
Option 3 — A manual embed
Paste an embed code into a page or a custom Liquid block. Total control over markup.
Good for: developers with a specific requirement. Limits: you own the performance problem — compression, lazy loading, responsive behaviour — and every theme update risks breaking it. Not recommended unless you have a developer.
Option 4 — A shoppable video app
An app adds video as a managed widget: carousels, stories bars, floating players, grids and product-page blocks, placed without touching theme code — and, crucially, with products tagged inside the video so people can buy from it.
Good for: anyone who wants video to actually contribute to revenue rather than decorate a page. Limits: it is another app, and pricing varies — watch for view or click metering.
Which should you use?
| If you want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Show one clip in the product gallery | Product media (built in) |
| Put a hero video on the homepage | Theme section |
| Reuse Instagram reels or TikToks | A shoppable video app |
| Let shoppers buy from inside the video | A shoppable video app |
| Know which video earned revenue | A shoppable video app |
| Hand-build a custom player | Manual embed (developer) |
Keeping your store fast
Video is the heaviest asset you can add to a page, and Shopify speed scores are unforgiving. Four rules: compress before uploading, lazy-load anything below the fold, never autoplay with sound, and avoid YouTube embeds above the fold because of the third-party script cost. A good app handles all four for you — Quinn compresses up to 20× with AI and lazy-loads from a CDN.
Making the video shoppable
Adding video is step one; the revenue comes from tagging products inside it. With Quinn: install from the Shopify App Store, import your Instagram reels or TikToks by link (or upload MP4/MOV), tag the products in each video, and place the widget — carousel, stories, floating, grid or PDP block. About five minutes, no theme code, free plan to start.
Questions
How do I add a video to a Shopify product page?
Go to Products, open the product, and upload the video under Media — it appears in the product gallery. For a video that shoppers can buy from, or one placed outside the gallery, use a shoppable video app instead.
Can I add video to Shopify without an app?
Yes. Shopify supports video in product media and most themes include a video section, and you can paste an embed code into a page. None of those make the video shoppable or give you per-video revenue attribution, which is what apps add.
Does adding video slow down Shopify?
It can, because video files are large. Compress before uploading, lazy-load anything below the fold, avoid autoplay with sound, and keep YouTube embeds away from the top of the page. Apps that compress and serve from a CDN — Quinn compresses up to 20× — keep the impact minimal.
How do I add Instagram reels or TikToks to Shopify?
Shopify has no native import for them. A shoppable video app is the practical route: Quinn imports reels and TikToks by link, then displays them as shoppable carousels, stories, grids or floating widgets on your store.
What video format does Shopify support?
MP4 and MOV are the safe choices, with MP4 (H.264) the most reliable across browsers and devices. Keep videos vertical (9:16) for social-style widgets, and short — under about 30 seconds for feed-style content.
