Embed a YouTube video in Shopify
Embedding YouTube in Shopify is straightforward, and in some places it is the right call. But YouTube embeds carry two costs most guides never mention — and one of them can put a competitor's video inside your own product page. Here is how to do it, and when not to.
Method 1 — Paste the URL into product media
- Open the product in Shopify admin.
- In Media, click Add media → Add video from URL.
- Paste the YouTube or Vimeo link and save.
Simplest route, appears in the product gallery. Shopify handles the player.
Method 2 — A theme section
In Online Store → Themes → Customize, add a Video section and paste the URL. Best for homepage or landing sections rather than the gallery.
Method 3 — Embed code on a page
- On YouTube, click Share → Embed and copy the iframe.
- In Shopify: Online Store → Pages, open the page, and switch the rich-text editor to </> HTML.
- Paste the iframe and save.
Useful for blog posts and content pages where you want control over size and start time.
The two costs nobody mentions
1. It is heavy
A YouTube embed loads a third-party player, its scripts and its tracking — before your video plays at all. On a product page, and especially above the fold, that lands directly on your Core Web Vitals. It is the reason a page with one embed can score materially worse than the same page without it.
2. It can show your competitors
YouTube's player can surface related videos and end screens. Depending on settings and how the viewer is signed in, that means another brand's video can appear inside your product page, at the exact moment someone was deciding to buy. Using rel=0 in the embed limits suggestions to your own channel but does not fully remove the surface.
When to use which
| Placement | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Blog post or content page | YouTube — the reach is worth the weight |
| About / brand story page | YouTube or Vimeo, below the fold |
| Homepage hero | Self-host — never a third-party player up top |
| Product page | Self-host or an app — do not risk competitor suggestions |
| Video that should sell | A shoppable app — YouTube cannot tag products |
Vimeo instead?
Vimeo solves the competitor problem — clean, brandable players with no third-party suggestions — and is the better choice for brand film. It is still a third-party embed with its own script weight, and it still cannot tag products or attribute revenue.
If the video is meant to sell
No embed can make a product buyable from inside the video. Quinn hosts and serves the video itself — compressed up to 20× by an in-house AI encoder, CDN-delivered, lazy-loaded — with products tagged inside and orders attributed per video. No theme code, free plan. See also where to host Shopify video.
Questions
How do I embed a YouTube video in Shopify?
Three ways: paste the URL into a product's Media section via Add video from URL, add a Video section in the theme customiser and paste the link, or copy the iframe from YouTube's Share and Embed option and paste it into a page using the HTML view of the editor.
Do YouTube embeds slow down Shopify?
Yes. The embed loads a third-party player, scripts and tracking before your video plays, which lands on your Core Web Vitals — particularly above the fold. For hero and product-page video, self-hosting or an app is usually faster.
Can a YouTube embed show competitors on my store?
It can. YouTube's player surfaces related videos and end screens, so another brand's video can appear inside your product page. Adding rel=0 limits suggestions to your own channel but does not remove the surface entirely — which is why product pages are the wrong place for a YouTube embed.
Is Vimeo better than YouTube for Shopify?
For brand-critical placements, usually yes — Vimeo's player is clean and brandable with no competitor suggestions. It is still a third-party embed with script weight, and like YouTube it cannot tag products or attribute revenue.
How do I embed a video on a Shopify page?
Go to Online Store, Pages, open the page, switch the editor to HTML view using the <> button, and paste the iframe embed code. Save and preview — checking on mobile, since embeds resize differently there.
